I have recently come across a tool over the web where in we can monitor the up time of our our websites / blogs. Its called Pingability

tools Know Website Uptime Using Pingability

The best thing about it is that it can also check SSL secured URLs.

Pingability can also check the followings:

SMTP: Your email server is working, and accepting delivery of an email address you specify.
DNS: Your DNS server is responding correctly.
FTP: That your FTP server is up and running (including checking a optional login)
Ports: That a port on your server (that you specify) is open (e.g. to check if SSH is running).

You can check as many sites as you like and as often as you need. What more can you ask for.

Following alerts are allowed.

Alerts Only When There is a Real Problem.
Alerts Via Email, SMS, Phone Call
You can alert multiple people/devices in the event of a failure or the site coming back up.

It presents a detailed report about the outrage happened or otherwise
