Indian railways has made carrying proof of identity compulsory for everyone who travels by an AC class ticket, be it and e-ticket or an i-ticket.

With effect from 15th Feb 2012, anyone who is traveling by an AC ticket has to display a valid proof of identity to TTE along with the tickets. This is to curb frauds where people don’t seem to care about names on the ticket if it is an I-ticket. “Chalta hai attitude” will atleast not work in AC classes at least.

Carrying photo id is already in force for tatkal tickets and e-tickets and these instructions are now applicable for I-tickets (issued from reservation counter). This is not applicable for passengers who have been upgraded to AC class from sleeper class. At least one person on the ticket should be carrying a valid photo id.

This is a good move and might help authorities to curb agents who book tickets in bulk before selling them on high prices without worrying about the name.
