Any image editing tool is a must to have tool specially for Bloggers these days for editing and playing around with images for their articles.

You all must have sometime worked on Adobe Photoshop to edit photos and would have definitely longed for it to be installed on your desktop / laptop. But not everyone can afford to have cost needed Adobe Photoshop. Another point to mention here is that it is bulky to have it installed and in loading too.

We sometimes require to do quick image editing and we prefer MS Paint over Photoshop but MS Paint deteriorates the image quality and we cannot generate png / transparent / multi layer images using it.

So the requirement basically is to have a tool which can perform major image editing functions performed by Photoshop, is cheap and is quick to use too.

Answer to all our concerns is a tool called Paint.NET

Paint.NET is free image and photo editing software for computers that run Windows. It features an intuitive and innovative user interface with support for layers, unlimited undo, special effects, and a wide variety of useful and powerful tools. An active and growing online community provides friendly help, tutorials, and plugins.

Over the years it has grown into a powerful yet simple image and photo editor tool. It has been compared to other digital photo editing software packages such as Adobe Photoshop, Corel Paint Shop Pro, Microsoft Photo Editor, and The GIMP.

You can do almost everything using Paint.NET that other tools do for you like Layers, Curve tools, gradient tools, transparent images, special effects and the list is endless. Read all its  features here.

Not only this, there are a number of plugins that have been made available, and that may be downloaded from their forum. These plugins add new effects and the ability to handle new file types.

It is a very small download, around 3.5 MB installer file, that we can quickly download and install and can take with us anywhere we go. It is built upon Microsoft .Net Framework 3.5 SP1, so one of the pre-requisite is to have it installed on the system. Now-a-days it comes inbuilt with MS Windows OS and if you are on any previous OS then you can download it from the Microsoft site for free.

Other System Requirements are:

  • Windows 7 (recommended), or Windows XP SP3, or Windows Vista SP1+, or newer
  • 800MHz processor (CPU). 512MB RAM. 1024 x 768 screen resolution
  • .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 (free download from Microsoft)

I have been using it for couple of months now and believe me it has ended my desire to have licensed Adobe Photoshop on my PC.

Hats off to its developers.
