We are dreaming for a time when we would vote online in the general elections eradicating the need of ballots, EVMs, physical management and thousands of crore rupees in managing elections.

That time may be far as of now as the computer education is limited to metros and tier 1 cities but can we not begin it from metros. System may not be hacking proof it looks.

Centeral Depository Services Ltd (CDSL) is trying to get a feel of online voting system by launching a portal for corporates to conduct ballot voting online among their shareholders.

e-Voting is an internet based platform through which shareholders can vote on resolutions proposed by companies requiring postal ballot without  having the necessity  to be physically present at the meeting or sending their votes through post.

Benefits to shareholders:

  1. Ability to take part in the decision making process in the comfort of their homes or offices.
  2. Can vote easily on any number of resolutions of any number of companies in which they are a shareholder and eligible to vote.
  3. Ease of voting – no pasting and posting.
  4. Ample time to vote till the last day.
  5. No scope for invalid votes

But has the system started to be used by corporates? Not sure about that. I received a postal ballot a week for back from a company where I am holding some shares.

I don’t understand why are we not promoting the system aggressively so that it is used by corporates?
